F**K The Rules...and how I write the books you LOVE! RELEASE DAY AND GIVEAWAY

Yes, I know, if I'm gonna swear in the title of a post, I should just do it, right?

But I get in enough trouble for all my naughty pictures, so I'm trying to be a good girl...

Fuck it!

I'll give you a minute to either enjoy the picture or run away. If that makes you uncomfortable, you probably stumbled into the wrong blog. Totally cool. My books probably aren't for you, but today is the release day for a TON of awesome books, so I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for!

Happy reading!

All right, now that those who don't love manlove are gone, let's get down to the how and why of what I do. Not sure it will help any new authors who hope that I know what I'm doing and can point them in the right direction. The best piece of advice I can probably give you is 'Don't do what I do.'

EVER.

Seriously, don't.

UNLESS you're willing to spend most of your career swimming against the tide.

If so, grab a seat, pour yourself some whiskey, and let's be friends! <g> I collect crazy little authors and you're cute!

Now, not only have I stepped into the rockstar romance genre without writing rockstars, but I ignored all the very successful trends in the genre. Not even trying to be a rebel, I just don't do formulas.

At all.

Actually, to be fair, I CAN'T do formulas. If I could I'd have a nice stable job writing for Harlequin. My books would fit neatly into categories and my life would be a whole lot simpler.

But I get bored easily and I can't write the kind of book I wouldn't be passionate about reading. Books others love that are cozy and comfortable gather dust on my shelves. I actually get a little jealous about those who can keep it simple because...

Well, remember what I said about swimming against the tide? It gets tiring. You're constantly sucking in mouthfuls of salty water while getting dragged under. You're never sure if your gonna gain some distance or drown.

Is it worth it though?

Abso-fucking-lutely!

I thought long and hard about what I was going to post today. The smartest thing would have been a happy 'It's RELEASE DAY!' post, with an excerpt. But this is the first book I've put out in awhile that isn't a rewrite, an expansion, or a completion. Ever since I released GOAL LINE this summer, this is the first book that's completely new.

It's about a super rich rockstar that meets one of his fangirls, who isn't like other fangirls, and they fall in love!

Yeah...no. Remember the formula deficiency I have? That right there is one that works for rockstar romance. So of course what I wrote is absolutely nothing like that.

And if that's the book you wanted, check out the bestsellers in the category. You'll find plenty of amazing books for your reading pleasure.

BACKLASH doesn't even start with introducing the heroine for quite some time. Actually, she takes her sweet time joining in and even I had a few moments where I was like 'This is a mistake. People are going to HATE this book.'

Then...I got out of my own fucking way and let the characters do their thing. This series isn't just about the heroine, or the heroes. Their lives revolve around a metalcore band that's struggling not to implode. None of the guys are rich, their tour schedule is crazy, and all but ONE has faced the reality that the lifestyle isn't all sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. It's hard work and they've got to fight to make it in a world where cheesy pop tunes dominate all the charts.

Which is how it works in real life.

So how do I do it? Well, like with the Cobras, I learn absolutely everything I can about the world my characters live in. I don't bother smoothing the edges or making anything easier on them. If a character is gay or bisexual, which many tend to be, they're not living in a world where everyone is accepting.

Life is hard. And books can be an escape, but they can also be a place that reflects your own failures and triumphs. Where you're just as uncertain as you are in your own life, but you know if you keep pressing forward, if you give it your all, you can be proud of every damn thing you accomplish.

This is the story of a band that doesn't get anything handed to them on a silver platter. But when they breakout? When they accomplish everything they've been fighting so hard for?

You get to celebrate with them. Because you were right by their sides every step of the way.

And when they fall in love? Damn, you feel it. You believe they've got someone who'll stand by their side.

Nothing is easy. Nothing is neat and shiny and pretty.

But it's a wild fucking ride!

  1. I'll be starting Backlash this evening & am so excited!!! Congratulations on the new series.
How hard is it for you to change genre mindsets when you finish a book and move to another in an entirely different genre? Do you do anything special to "shake off" the current genre so that you can write in a different one?

    1. That's an awesome question, Angela! :D

When I'm working on a book, there's always tons of research, as well as music that gets me in the right frame of mind. With Winter's Wrath, I read books by some heavy metal singers, read any blogs or interviews I could find, and of course listened to the music. I also went to several concerts.

Shifting back to hockey will mean immersing myself even more into the hockey world. I'll re-read those books and watch fun game montages. Read biographies from my favorite old school players.

So I guess the answer is, I do a few things! lol! Thankfully, with my two series, I have a clear idea of what works. When I get into different subjects? Well, I'll have to get creative! :)

      Hugs,
      Bianca

  2. I'm hoping to get it read sometime this week but it was a heavy week for releases and one of my favorites snuck in 2 on me. My question is when are you coming back to visit KY? I would love to hang out again. I am making peach and cherry pie shine now along with the apple pie.
    Your book looks amazing.

I hope you enjoy the book! Sneaky authors are fun, so at least we're all keeping you busy!

  3. Hmmm ask you anything that could be dangerous! Do the characters tell you the story or does the story come to you first then the characters lead the way? Oh and have to add these guys are awesome!

    1. lol! It could be, but I've been asked some pretty outrageous stuff before. ;)

The characters tend to come first, sneaking up on me with a 'I have an awesome story to tell. Put aside everything you're doing and listen!'

At which point I become the most obedient you've ever seen me. I follow the characters along their journey, writing as fast as I can to get it all down. It's a rush, and sometimes frustrating because I tell them 'What if you did...?' and I get a dirty look. So I usually keep my mouth shut.

I'm so happy you love the guys, Kim! So excited to get back on tour with them!

  4. Thank you for writing this book! I am so excited to read the finished product! Was there a specific person or people who inspired the guys?

    1. Not really. My muse kinda gives birth to these characters fully formed. He's weird like that! lol!

Some of the situations were inspired by actual events though.

And I can't wait to see what you think! Happy Reading!

  5. Happy Release Day! I'm so freaking excited to read this. I absolutely adore you and your books. They are some of the best menages I've read. The question I have is will you ever write a menage with 3 males (no female) or do you not have control on where your characters take you?

    1. Hi Michelle!

So happy you've enjoyed my books so far and I hope you love this one too!

Gotta be honest...I have ABSOLUTELY no control! lol! Like in the Cobras, sometimes a character will throw me completely off and not even want a menage. Which confuses me, but I'm just the crazy little person behind the keyboard, letting the characters take over to tell their stories.

I've had MMM scenes, but so far, nothing that sticks. They're fun to write though!

Happy reading and thanks so much for stopping by!

  6. Happy release day. Loved this story. When you get the idea for a new book. How long does it take you to research and write the book? Love your stories. Can't wait to read more Chris

    1. WHOOT! So happy you enjoyed the story, Chris!

Hmm...how to answer that. It really depends. Some books, like Game Misconduct, Defensive Zone, and, most recently, Backlash, kinda flood my brain and I can get them done in a few months. Research takes a bit longer. With the Cobras it was easy, because I grew up knowing hockey. I just needed to get a bit deeper into the lifestyle.

With Backlash, it took months for me to get a grasp of the lifestyle of a band. Once I felt I understood from all angles, it was easy because the characters were ready to let me in. :)

      Bianca

  7. Hopefully this doesn't post twice. Stupid page gave me an error.

Started the book this afternoon and I'm loving it! It makes being stuck on the bus in traffic less irritating.
Here's my question: Do you ever find yourself arguing with your characters about where the story is going? Be had writer friends talk about threatening their characters if they don't stop acting up.

    1. Hi Irene!

      Nope, you're good!

I've tried arguing with my characters. They stop talking to me! lol! So I'm the one who learned to behave in this relationship. And, luckily, they usually know what they're doing. I do throw things at them (situations, not actual objects) to see how they'll react, but then I stand back and let them deal in their own way.

So happy you're enjoying the book! Happy reading!

      Hugs,

  8. Hi Bianca, I've been following your work for a while now, even met you last year at TNEE in Vegas, that was really fun!

A couple of questions that might be interelated: how much of your life do you put in your books (meaning things that have happened to you), how much research do you do (we know you love hockey, great Cobra stories), but this is a new storyline, and a most important question, if you could have your own menage, who would it be (celebrity, sports player etc.)?

Can't wait to start reading Backlash, I got it earlier today!

    1. Hi Eva!

Damn, my blog is messing with my own replies! lol! I'd answered yesterday, sorry about that!

Love meeting you in Vegas! I hope you come to another event I'm at this year! <3

I don't think I put much of my life into my books...I mean, that would be boring, I spend most of my time writing. What goes down on the page is much more interesting! I even try to put my personal opinions aside so my characters can come out as the people they are, you know? Sometimes my research will revolve around why different personalities act the way they do. Or why some follow certain beliefs. I don't have to agree, but I have to understand where they're coming from.

Which also answers the research question. A LOT! lol! I research the most ridiculous things, but it adds another layer of realism that I love in my own favorite books.

My own menage? Well, if I got to pick the guys this time, they would probably be Johnny Dep and Ian Somerhalder. For the first one. I'm greedy, so I wouldn't stop there, but it's a good start. ;)

      Happy reading!

      Hugs,
      Bianca

  11. First of all, I love everything you write and have a huge girl crush on you!

So, on to the question. Do you ever wish you could live out your stories? Live the lifestyles in the books?

    1. MWAH! How you doin'? ;)

Love the question, Melanie! And yes, I'd love to be in that world and live out the lifestyle. I do a lot of things in the real world that are pretty awesome, but nothing's as pretty and shiny as it is in fiction. There are very few real men as attentive as my favorite heroes. But I'd LOVE to meet one!

  13. Hi Bianca from Australia. I thoroughly enjoyed Backlash and cannot wait for Brave's story. I was wondering if there is any chance we will see you in Australia soon? I also wanted to know if you have plans for any other series besides Dartmouth Cobras or Winters Wraith and if so what?

    1. Hi Erin!

I'm hoping I can make it to Australia soon, but I have to be careful with travel plans since the Canadian dollar really is becoming like Monopoly money! lol! Hopefully that will change and travel will be easier. :)

I always have TONS of ideas, but for the next little while I'll be focusing on The Cobras and Winter's Wrath. I also want to get the first Rush Boys book out and that one's been pushed back for way too long! Hopefully this year I'll get to release A LOT!

      Hugs,
